On August 13, 2010, there was a voluntary nationwide recall of 30 million eggs by Wright County Egg Farms in Galt, Iowa. FDA investigation is ongoing. The eggs are sold under the following brand names: Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, and Kemps. To put this in perspective, this represents less than 1% of all eggs produced in the U.S. Eggs affected can be found at http://wayback.archive-it.org/7993/20170112154426/http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/ArchiveRecalls/2010/ucm224085.htm.
Hundreds of cases of Salmonellosis have been diagnosed since June 2010, affecting people in California, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Illinois, Texas, and Wisconsin. No deaths have been reported to date.
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacteria that is passed on in several ways. Chickens can have it in their feces or in their ovaries. Hence, it can be passed through the egg shells or be within the egg itself. As a result, there are stringent egg cleaning and testing procedures for hens throughout the country.
What are the signs and symptoms?
Fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, nausea, and vomiting can occur within 12 to 72 hours after consuming the undercooked contaminated egg. These symptoms can last up to approximately one week.
How can I prevent this infection?
First, check if your eggs are one of the eggs on the recall list. If so, return them in the original carton to the store. Check the dates and codes on the bottom of the egg carton. For detailed info, go to http://www.eggsafety.org/ or call the Egg Safety Media Hotline at (866) 272-5582.
Second and most important, the only safe egg is a fully cooked egg. So, cook your eggs thoroughly. That means fully boiled or cooked eggs and fully cooked scrambled eggs are safe. However, sunny-side up, over easy, runny scrambled eggs are not necessarily safe; eating them puts you at risk of contracting Salmonellosis, otherwise known as Salmonella poisoning.
Lastly, be aware of eating uncooked eggs or foods that contained uncooked eggs, especially when dining out. For example, Hollandaise sauce has uncooked eggs. Avoid it, whenever possible.
If infected, do we need to be treated?
Most children and adults do not need antibiotics. In fact, antibiotics prolong the length of time you are contagious. Usually, the only treatment needed is a bland diet with electrolyte drinks to help replenish the electrolytes lost through diarrhea.
Children less than three (3) months old, the elderly, and anyone who’s immunocompromised must be treated. Otherwise, the infection can spread into the blood, resulting in a serious and potentially deadly infection.
As always, if you or your child is sick, contact your doctor, if you have any questions.
Nationwide, manufacturers are recalling their drop-side cribs left and right. Recently, over two (2) million have been recalled due to an increased number of injuries and deaths. This brings the total to over nine (9) million that have been recalled in the last five (5) years. Some of the manufacturers affected include Pottery Barn Kids, Simmons, Bexco, LaJobi, Jardine, Evenflo, Delta, Child Craft (out of business), Graco, Simplicity, Generation 2, ChilDESIGNS, Stork Craft, Simplicity, PlayKids USA, and L.A. Baby. Sadly, the list does not end here. It goes on and on. To check to see if your crib has been recalled, go to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
The injury or death can occur when the drop-side crib’s hardware comes loose, leaving a gap between the baby’s mattress and the rail, leading to suffocation or strangulation. Since 2000, these cribs have resulted in at least 32 deaths and 16 cases of entrapment in infants and toddlers, with another 14 deaths linked as well.
About two (2) weeks ago, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) (http://www.cpsc.gov/) proposed a new standard that cribs manufactured for sale or resale must have four (4) fixed sides. If passed, it is predicted that as early as Summer 2011, drop-side cribs will be banned sale, re-sale or use in stores, hotels, and daycare centers.
What should you do if you have a one? Stop using it. Contact the manufacturer or search their website. Many are offering kits that will immobilize the rail. If no such kit is available, please consider replacing your crib. Although the deaths have been few, your child could become one of the rare ones. It is not worth taking the chance.
On June 4, 2010, McDonald’s issued a recall of all of their Shrek Forever After™ glasses. It was found that the paint on the exterior of the glasses contain cadmium. It is important to note that the glass itself was not contaminated. Cadmium is a soft metal found in dirt. We all inhale microscopic amounts of this which doesn’t cause any harm. However, touching this metal in concentrated amounts is known to cause cancer, permanently lowers IQ in children, results in learning disabilities, causes kidney and bone damage. In addition, in children, the amounts of this toxin continue to accumulate in the kidneys over time, affecting children’s health more than adults. For more information, on cadmium, please see my post on February 22, 2010. Glasses previously sold at McDonald’s were not included in the recall.
As of June 9, 2010, the glasses can be returned for a refund of $3 per glass at any McDonald’s. For more information, go to www.mcdonalds.com/glasses or call them at 800-244-6227.
In recent years, baby teeth have been recognized for having stem cells as well. The baby teeth that can be used to store stem cells are the top and bottom six (6) front baby teeth.
Stem Cells are cells that contain the ability to transform into a variety of other specialized cell types. That being said, there are several type of stem cells, each type differs in that some have unlimited capacity to differentiate into any type of specialized cell; others are very limited. In research, embryonic stem cells have been used. In daily life, stem cells are collected from umbilical cord blood after delivery. Traditionally, these cells have been used to treat leukemia through bone marrow transplant.
So, the question is, should you bank your babies’ teeth? The next question is which companies offer teeth stem cell banking?
First, it is unknown whether or not the stem cells from baby teeth will ever be used for treatments in the future. It many take anywhere from several years to decades until this will be known.
Second, the cost is quite expensive. It can cost approximately $600 for the initially, per tooth, with $100 annual cryopreservation storage fee. Alternatively, there are twenty (20) year storage plans for multiple baby teeth which can cost approximately $2,500. Each dental stem cell bank has different price plans.
Third, if you decide to store the stem cells of your children’s teeth, the above storage banks must receive the tooth within 48 hours. What does this involve? You must register with a tooth stem cell bank. Place the baby tooth in milk immediately. You or your dentist must use their collection kit which needs to be sent to the tooth stem cell bank via overnight mail.
So, should you use a dental stem cell bank? Ultimately, the decision is yours. Currently, many experts do not considered it to be worth the expense, as it is still unknown of what benefit these stem cells can be. It is unlikely to be able to treat leukemia via bone marrow transplant. However, it is speculated that it may be beneficial for tooth or bone treatments in the future.
If you are interested, the three (3) companies that store stem cells from baby teeth are:
As of Friday, April 30, 2010, McNeil Pharmaceuticals issued a voluntary recall on brand name Tylenol (infants’ & children’s), Tylenol Plus, Motrin (infants’ & children’s), Zyrtec (children’s), and Benadryl (children’s – bubble gum flavor).
In a quality review, the company found several possible problems. Some of the medications had higher concentration of the active ingredients than listed, some had problems with the inactive ingredients, & others were contaminated with particles. To date, there has been no documented harm to any child. McNeil is not sure when they will manufacture more.
So what does this mean for you and your children? If you have any of the affected medications in your home, throw them away.
In order to know if you have one of the recalled products, you will need to find the NDC number located on the bottle. In general, the NDC number is in small print on the top part of the bottle’s label, above the product’s name. For a complete list with pictures of the products recalled, go to http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/page.jhtml?id=/include/mpr_ndc_finder.inc
You can call the company at (888) 222-6036 or read more at http://www.mcneilproductrecall.com/ for any further questions. You can go to the website to ask for a refund. You will need to enter some information including the NDC number.
You may still use the generic version of these products. These have not been shown to have any problems.
Cadmium Jewelry Poisoning
What is Cadmium? Cadmium is a soft metal found in dirt. We all inhale microscopic amounts of this which don’t cause any harm. It seems that once the U. S. Congress banned lead in children’s toys and jewelry in 2008, these manufacturers replaced one cheap metal with another cheap and more toxic metal. How could this happen? The manufacturers used a loophole; cadmium is banned in toys, but not jewelry.
In January of this year, cadmium was found in children’s jewelry purchased at Wal Mart, Claire’s, and a Dollar N More store. It was found that approximately 12% of the pieces tested contained a high level of cadmium. Most notably, some of Disney’s “The Princess and the Frog” jewelry had cadmium. Children usually play with jewelry in their mouths. In addition, even if your child doesn’t, she probably touches it often. Cadmium can then be ingested when she puts her hand in her mouth as most young children often do.
This month, there is another bombshell. Cadmium was found in teen and adult jewelry. Most of the jewelry shown to have high levels of cadmium was manufactured in China. However, some pieces came from India as well. A consumer environmentalist group, the Center for Environmental Health (www.ceh.org) found that approximately 7% of the pieces it tested contain high levels of cadmium, some up to 91% of the total weight of the item. The jewelry tested was obtained from various stores including Justice, Catherine’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Aeropostale.
Many of you may wonder what to do next. The U. S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has recommended that you throw away all of your children’s cheap metal jewelry. If your child has any of the known affected jewelry, dispose of it immediately. If you would like to know if your child’s jewelry is filled with cadmium, you can test it. Test kits can be found at www.cadmiumtestkit.com.
Swine Flu aka H1N1 Flu has everyone up in arms. Some people are fearful of the disease, others of the vaccine. Every day, after I examine their sick child, loving parents ask me, “Is it the Flu? Is it the bad one?” And if it’s not Swine Flu, I hear, “Oh thank God; it’s not Swine Flu.” I also hear, “I don’t know. It’s just too new. I’m afraid. Besides, we never get the Flu shot; we never get the Flu.”
So what do you do? Get the vaccine.
It’s safe. It wasn’t made any faster than any other annual Flu vaccine. The difference is that the strain is known; it’s specific. Instead of 3 potential strains, it’s the H1N1 strain.
Here are the facts. Since April 2009, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has noted 200 Flu related pediatric deaths in the United States. 171 of those deaths were documented as H1N1 Flu, one of those deaths was due to Flu B, and the other 28 were non subtyped Flu deaths. Let’s put that in perspective. In the 2007-2008 Flu season, there were 88 Flu related pediatric deaths in the U.S. Making this season clearly worse. And the season isn’t even close to the end.
The reality is that millions around the world will get the Swine Flu. Few of your children will die from it. However, many of your children will get the disease. Your child will have to stay home from daycare or school. You’ll lose work. You will wonder if your other children, family, friends or even if you will get the disease from them. Many of you will spend many sleepless nights worrying whether or not your child will be okay. And even after they’re better, you will fear the secondary infection that’s just around the corner. The Flu weakens your immune system leaving you susceptible to other bacterial infections, like pneumonia.
There’s one question you need to ask yourself. Do you really want to sit there thinking you could have prevented this moment?
